Age is one of the first characteristics we notice in other people. When age is used to categorize and divide people by attributes that cause harm, disadvantage or injustice, and undermine intergenerational solidarity, ageism appears. Age discrimination becomes important, especially when it occurs in older people.
Ageism is a discriminatory behavior that tends to be invisible, leading to worsening physical and mental health, increased social isolation and loneliness, greater economic insecurity, reduced quality of life and, ultimately, premature death, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) World Report on Ageism. This report was prepared in 2021 as part of the global strategy and action plan on aging and health within the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030).
This year we will highlight situations in which ageist attitudes commonly occur towards the elderly and, thus, raise awareness of the need to identify and rectify these ways of acting in our field.
