Care professionals remember the importance of patients being at home or in a suitable space at the time of the call, and if necessary accompanied, to ensure good communication and the same quality of the visit as if it were in person.
The professionals of the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Service of Parc Taulí remind us that the pre-operative telematic visits that are currently being carried out, by telephone or by video consultation, are a medical procedure that requires the same care by the professional and the patient who if it were face-to-face. Therefore, while it is done it is essential that both are in a quiet environment that ensures proper communication between the two parties.
Parc Taulí anesthesiologists currently perform about 270 weekly preoperative visits to patients who have a scheduled surgery over the following days or weeks. Of these, 15% are done in person - the most complex - while the other 85% are done electronically, as all the technological means are available to make it possible. As in other specialties, notices of the day and time of the visit are sent to the patient in advance via SMS.
At the preoperative visit, the anesthetist informs the patient of how the operation will be performed and what the risks are, while gathering important medical information from the patient in order to establish a correct anesthetic plan. In some cases, an analysis and / or an electrocardiogram will have been performed previously. The patient is also given very personalized and relevant information for the day of the intervention, such as the medication to be taken in case he is following any treatment.
Therefore, the patient is asked to be in a suitable condition and space when it is time for the visit, with a table and pen to be able to take note of the doctor's instructions and in a quiet environment to be able to raise their doubts. If it is an elderly person or person with difficulties, they are also asked to be accompanied, as they would be if they had gone to the face-to-face visit. Even if it is in the distance, "we need a space and adequate conditions to ensure proper communication and that they have understood everything we have told them, because it is important information," they emphasize from the Anesthesiology Service.
Given the pandemic situation for COVID-10, the modality of telematic visits is making it possible to carry out a lot of care activity while avoiding travel and contributing to the necessary social distancing to minimize the risk of infection.
