Cystic fibrosis is the most common inherited genetic disease in Catalonia
Cystic fibrosis is the most common inherited genetic disease in Catalonia that severely and progressively affects the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems of people who suffer from it. Screening tests carried out on all infants in Catalonia since the end of 1998 have determined that it affects one in 5.000 babies. CF does not have a curative treatment, although much progress has been made in recent years, and the path to finding it is getting closer every day. Genetic research has identified the altered gene. Gene therapy is one of the most promising avenues of treatment, but there are others such as pharmacological, transplantation and other possibilities in which doctors and researchers work.
Sabadell Hospital is one of the three reference centers in Catalonia for the treatment of people affected by CF, together with the Vall d'Hebron Children's Hospital in Barcelona, and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Esplugues of Llobregat. In Sabadell, 150 affected people are currently being monitored, aged between 4 months and 60 years. In the last year, 4 new cases have been diagnosed at this center using neonatal screening.
