Next Saturday, October 25, will take place in the new Auditorium Taulí the day 'The Prader-Willi syndrome. Experience in a reference center ', with the participation of a hundred professionals from various specialties from different centers in Spain, and relatives of children affected by this syndrome. The day, of a practical nature, is organized by the Parc Taulí and the Prader-Willi Association of Catalonia. 

It is estimated that one in 15.000 newborns have SPW

Specialists from various fields (endocrinology, nutrition, genetics, psychology, neurology ...) will participate in the day, who will discuss the latest news of this disorder in different stages, child and adult. The aim is to share the experiences and work systematically used by teams of professionals across the State caring for those affected by Prader-Willi Syndrome, and to incorporate the views of patients and their carers in this process. .

The results of the project "Study of cerebral functional connectivity in food motivation networks in adult patients with Prader-Willi syndrome" will also be presented.

Prader-Willi Syndrome (SPW) is a rare disease characterized by severe hypotonia at birth, which hinders eating, followed by mental and psychomotor developmental disorders, growth defects and onset within a few years of life. an exaggerated appetite that leads to extreme obesity with all its consequences. This syndrome is caused by different genetic mechanisms that result from the physical or functional absence of genes on chromosome 15.

Parc Taulí is a national reference center for the diagnosis and monitoring of these patients, both in pediatric and adulthood.

There is no cure for this syndrome, so early diagnosis is important for proper symptom care. Prader Willi Syndrome can occur in people of all genders and in all races.

The Clinical Genetics Service and the Laboratory of the UDIAT have diagnosed since 1996, 194 cases of SPW, 70 of which are treated at the Hospital de Sabadell. An average of 7-8 patients are diagnosed each year.
