The Infectious Diseases Service. Interdisciplinary work

El Infectious Diseases Service derives from the creation in 1991 of the Infectious Pathology Care Program and aims to prevent, control and treat infectious diseases. One of the essential characteristics of the service is interdisciplinarity. We work together with other professionals from different specialties and fields: doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, etc. The service is structured in the following areas:

  • HIV-AIDS Unit: the first cases were diagnosed in 1985 in our hospital. The fundamental axes of this line were the setting up of a day hospital to provide more adequate care and reduce admissions, within the framework of an interdisciplinary care, collaborating with doctors, nurses, psychologists, workers. social, etc.

  • Control of hospital infection: encouraging the specialization of nursing staff and interaction with the different services of the hospital, such as the ICU, the Traumatology and Orthopedics Service and the General Surgery Service.

  • Attention to the infectious pathology of the community: assuming the control of complex diseases, the implementation of diagnostic protocols and treatments applicable throughout the hospital, and with the collaboration of professionals from different specialties and especially with the services of Pharmacy and Microbiology.

  • Passenger Service Unit: offers its specialized care services as an international vaccination center and advice and health care to travelers and patient care with imported diseases.

  • A has recently been created interdisciplinary unit for care of sexually transmitted diseases.

It should be noted that the implementation of control programs and good use of antibiotics have been a priority of the service since its inception. The service monitors nearly 1.000 HIV patients, makes about 5.000 annual patient visits to outpatient clinics, 3.000 visits to users of the passenger care unit, and 300 to 400 annual discharges from the hospitalization area. specific.

In the field of research, Dr. Ferran Segura has been a pioneer in the research of zoonotic diseases (transmitted by animals), interdisciplinary care for AIDS and its epidemiological control.
