It is the first device of this kind to be implemented in a hospital in Spain.
The Pneumology Service of Parc Taulí has renewed one of the five devices available for the practice of bronchoscopy, with the acquisition of the Olympus brand video bronchoscope, a new device on the market since last September that provides a innovative technology for respiratory bronchoscopy testing. These tests are basically performed to diagnose lung disease, mainly lung cancer and lung infections. In Spain it is the first device of this kind to be purchased in a hospital.
Bronchoscopy is a diagnostic technique that allows you to visualize the airways (trachea and bronchi) by introducing a flexible tube that incorporates a small high-resolution video camera. The high quality of the images offered by this new model of videobronchoscope allows us to visualize the state of the circulation of blood vessels in the respiratory mucosa, providing additional information that conventional devices do not offer.
Beyond the diagnostic function, the videobronchoscope also performs a therapeutic function, allowing biopsy and cauterization of the lesions, with a scanning time of less than conventional bronchoscopy. Another advantage of the new device is its ergonomics, which facilitates the maneuvers of the exploration, minimizing the forced positions of the specialist when performing the test.
Professionals from the Parc Taulí Pulmonology Service perform an average of 600 bronchoscopies a year and diagnose about 200 new cases of lung cancer a year.
