Parc Taulí has been designated as one of the units of clinical expertise (UEC) in systemic autoimmune diseases in Catalonia, both for adults and for the pediatric population. The resolution, which was made public a few weeks ago, is part of the strategy for the reorganization of minority diseases of the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut), and also designates the five major hospitals in Barcelona as UECs for the adult subarea, and the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital and the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital for the pediatric subarea.
Specifically, this UEC includes systemic autoimmune diseases (with lupus, scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome or autoimmune myopathies, among the best known), as well as autoimmune vasculitis (which includes a very heterogeneous group of diseases that run with inflammation of the blood vessels in any part of the body).
The new UEC of Parc Taulí is coordinated by the director of the Rheumatology Service, Dr. Jordi Gratacós, with the support of the director of the Internal Medicine Service, Dr. Joaquim Oristrell, and the pediatric coordinator, Judith Sánchez. At his side is a multidisciplinary team that includes numerous medical and surgical specialists who cover the entire clinical spectrum of these diseases, under the coordination of Dr. Carles Tolosa and the support of Dr. Carles Galisteo.
The coordinator of this UEC explains that behind this designation there is an important work that has been carried out for some time in the Parc Taulí, such as the creation and adaptation of the necessary protocols for the management of these patients, following criteria of maximum quality of care and science, or the fact that the hospital has had all the necessary resources to care for these pathologies.
Beyond the healthcare field, the recognition as a unit of clinical expertise serves to strengthen the tertiarism of our hospital in the territory of Central Catalonia and “also helps the effort of the I3PT to develop teaching and scientific programs and to provide us with greater capacity to conduct clinical trials from the research group dedicated to inflammatory joint disease, bone metabolism and systemic autoimmune diseases ", underlines Dr. Gratacós.
Parc Taulí is also designated as a unit of clinical expertise (UEC) in genetic-based cognitive-behavioral diseases, in pediatric age, and in minority neuromuscular diseases, both for adults and for the pediatric population. All these units of expertise are located within the Rare Diseases Unit of Parc Taulí, which is coordinated by the director of the Pediatric Medicine Service, Pepi Rivera.
