The Rheumatology Service of Parc Taulí has received the advanced quality certification in the management of axial spondyloarthritis (EspAx), awarded by the Spanish Society of Care Quality (SECA). It is the third hospital in Catalonia and the sixth in Spain to obtain this certification.

The Spanish Society of Health Managers endorses the SpACE certification standard, developed by SECA together with Novartis, in collaboration with the Spanish Coordinator of Spondyloarthritis Associations (CEADE). The formal ceremony of delivery of the certification took place today in the Parc Taulí, with the presence of representatives of all parties involved.

The importance of early diagnosis to prevent the serious consequences of the evolution of the disease

Axial spondyloarthritis is a chronic inflammatory rheumatism, linked to a genetic predisposition, which preferentially affects the axial skeleton (spine). It manifests in young people (maximum incidence between 25 and 30 years), with non-traumatic inflammatory back pain. These symptoms may also be accompanied by inflammation of peripheral joints and extramuscular-skeletal manifestations, such as eye, intestinal, and skin inflammation. Its early diagnosis is very important to start a treatment quickly, as otherwise it can evolve with physical disability and spinal deformities in more than 40% of cases.

The aim of this certification program is to promote the continuous improvement of the quality of care in the care of patients with axial spondyloarthritis in hospitals and care units of the National Health System, achieving the optimal time in its diagnosis and encouraging management and follow-up of the chronic patient with this pathology.

For the rheumatologist at Parc Taulí in Sabadell, and care coordinator of the Spondyloarthritis Unit, Mireia Moreno, “this recognition is a satisfaction to the work and dedication that our clinical unit has been carrying out for many years. In addition, it is a source of great joy to see that the care we offer our patients meets the highest quality standards.

For the head of the Rheumatology Service of Parc Taulí, Jordi Gratacós, this recognition “is an award for intense work developed for years by our service, which has required the collaboration of other specialists, such as dermatologists, gastroenterologists , ophthalmologists or radiologists, in the case of complex and multiorgan diseases ”.
