In 2020, 2.064 babies were born in Parc Taulí, of which 317 were premature. Of the total number of premature babies, 29 are large premature babies, meaning they were born at less than 32 weeks gestation, and the rest, 288 babies, at less than 37 weeks gestation.
2020 was a year conditioned by COVID 19, which meant a major change in the care of the hospitalized baby. The model of developmental and family-centered care, in which parents are not visitors but primary caregivers, was affected by the emergence of restrictions. Gradually, however, these restrictions changed with published scientific evidence and the evolution of the pandemic, allowing parents to become primary caregivers 24 hours a day and to be able to return to the pandemic. Unit, respecting the corresponding prevention measures.
Since 2019 we have had the collaboration of the Association of parents of premature babies in Catalonia, SOM Prematurely, which has made it possible to incorporate the presence of volunteers to support families. With the signing of the framework collaboration agreement with this association, signed at the beginning of this 2021, this cooperation has been consolidated with other activities to support families.
Today, coinciding with International Premature Day, we once again emphasize the importance of promoting the emotional bond between parents and their babies, favoring maximum time together. This proximity brings confidence and security to cope with the time of admission, which can last months, and helps them take on their role as primary caregivers and future parenting.
