The Parc Taulí Knee Unit has recently launched the ROSA robot (Robotic Surgical Assistant) in knee prosthesis interventions. Its use provides an improvement in the precision of this surgical technique and, therefore, represents a qualitative leap for patients with knee arthrosis who must undergo this surgery.
The ROSA robot has a robotic arm and sophisticated software that allows a continuous analysis of the data and guides the surgeon during the placement of joint prostheses. Throughout the State there are 20 ROSA robots in different hospitals and, of these, eight are in Catalan hospitals, including Parc Taulí.
The director of the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service at Parc Taulí, Xavier Pelfort, emphasizes that the application of robotic surgery in the implantation of the knee prosthesis "it brings greater precision to the surgery as well as all the information on the state of the ligaments, while reducing the margin of error during the surgical intervention and some of the possible post-operative complications''.
Dr. Pelfort emphasizes that this robot is designed for first knee replacement surgery, but in the near future, possibly in the summer of 2023, it can be applied to hip surgery. The candidate patient profile for intervention with the ROSA robot is all those patients with knee arthrosis who require a primary prosthesis.
The team at the Knee Unit performs an average of 500 knee pathology surgeries every year, which include meniscal, traumatic, cartilaginous, fracture and sports pathology. Of these interventions, between 250-300 are for the implantation of a knee prosthesis.
