The 31st of May, World No Tobacco Day, is a good day to make the population aware of the importance of smoking cessation as a health project and to inform about the dangers of continuing. Health professionals play a very active role in the prevention, advice and treatment of smoking.

Since 2006, the Consorci Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí has been part of the Catalan Network of Smoke-Free Hospitals (XCHSF), with the support of the Public Health Agency of Catalonia and the smoking cessation programs (PDT), help health centers to establish protocols and intervention circuits for smoking cessation aimed at hospitalized patients and workers.

Quitting smoking is not always easy, but more and more people have succeeded in quitting smoking. Since 2019, as part of the PDT of the Prevention/Occupational Health Service, 102 professionals from Parc Taulí have consulted to be able to stop smoking and, during 2022, seven professionals have received training in brief smoking intervention.

The health professionals of the centers affiliated to the XCHSF have training in smoking cessation and support in help programs to quit smoking. Dr. Rosa M. Serrano, of the Prevention/Occupational Health Service, emphasizes that "the benefits of quitting smoking are clear: ten years after quitting, ex-smokers have half the risk of dying from lung cancer than people who still smoke, and the risk of dying from myocardial infarction returns to basal level after 15 years of quitting smoking”.

Tobacco use is the first preventable cause of loss of health and premature mortality in the world. It is one of the main risk factors in chronic cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and numerous pathologies, including cancer.

The different strategies in addressing tobacco cessation include preventive measures to increase the number of ex-smokers, avoid involuntary exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and prevent the addition of new smokers.

This year's World No Tobacco Day theme is: "Important steps are best taken together. We help you quit smoking".

We encourage all professionals to make a good health purpose. You always win!
