Dr. Jorge Herreria and Dr. Fabián Romero, from neurosurgery service of the Parc Taulí, have csuccessfully corrected a cervical curvature of 56º using 3D technology to a 40-year-old patient who had previously been operated on for a shot to the neck, which had produced a spinal cord injury.

The patient suffered from unbearable pain in the cervical area. After carrying out a study, an abnormal curvature of the cervical vertebrae was detected due to a fracture of the C6 and C7 vertebrae, which had caused a kyphotic deformity, a curvature of the cervical vertebrae.

After presenting and studying the case with the team of neurosurgeons, due to its complexity because the cervical vertebrae are smaller and the patient had already been operated on previously, it was decided to perform a surgical operation to correct the cervical deformity, with an inverted curve of 56º, and fix this position on the cervical spine.

Dr. Jorge Herreria made one 360º approach using 3D implants, carried out by the I3PT laboratory. First, the damaged vertebrae, C6 and C7, were replaced with a titanium metal mesh to undo the tilt in the neck. Next, the high cervical vertebrae were fixed with nails and rods.

To be able to do this operation, a plan was first made with a three-dimensional anatomical model, with the help of Tailor Surgery, where the trajectory of the nails through the vertebra was designed so as not to injure the vertebral arteries and the marrow neck Subsequently, personalized guides were designed that would be placed on the patient's fixed structures, in order to be able to place the keys correctly.

The operation was a success, it was possible to correct more than 33º of the previous kyphosis by fixing the patient's neck in a practically normal position, of 20º.

This success case was presented at the XXVI National Congress of the Spanish Society of Neurosurgery.
