This morning the girls and boys who arrived in Sabadell from the Western Sahara came to the hospital to undergo a medical check-up at the Pediatric External Consultations. This year, the visit to the hospital was not a new experience, because most of them already came last year.
The children have received the mandatory medical examination established within the project organized by the association in coordination with the Catalan Health Service. The professionals at Parc Taulí have carried out a complete basic review, with a visit to the Ophthalmology Service, and those who needed it have received specialist help. The most common ailments of these children are intestinal parasites, tooth decay, lice and malnutrition.
The 'Holidays in Peace' project has been operating since 2004 and offers girls and boys living in refugee camps in the Western Sahara a few weeks in Catalonia. The aim is to alleviate the situation of children and their families, especially in summer, when temperatures reach 60 degrees and the basic needs of food and health care are not covered.
Safia, Aicha, Fatma, Hleila, Galia, Fadua, Yslem, Hassan, Chej, Lehsen, Ysmae and Sahla are 12 of the 25 children who have come to Vallès this summer. For two months, they will live with a host family who will provide them with an opportunity to live new experiences.
During the months of July and August, the association organizes activities such as a trip to the Camp Nou, an excursion to the municipal swimming pool or the Water Games in Plaça Catalunya in Castellà del Vallès. As well as other activities that the children do with their host family.
