Parc Taulí is one of the three reference centers in Cystic Fibrosis in Catalonia, for adults and children, and since last year it has been a reference unit with a degree of excellence, a distinction awarded by the Spanish Society of Cystic Fibrosis (CF).
The multidisciplinary team that works to improve the quality of life of people with CF cares for around 85 patients. In recent years, lines of research have evolved; treatments for patients; as well as its administration at earlier ages. Despite the advances, both in the detection of the disease and in its treatment, the coordinator of the Cystic Fibrosis Unit of Parc Taulí and president of the Spanish CF Society, Dr. Óscar Asensio, highlighted on World Cystic Fibrosis Day that "we have between 30%-35% of patients with CF who do not have treatment” and insisted that “there are different lines of research to find effective treatments for these people”, who are patients with an advanced state of the disease and who already have sequelae.
In this sense, Dr. Asensio wanted to insist on the importance of research into new products and asked "more speed” to the Ministry of Health to speed up the access route to incorporate new drugs for patients with minority diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common hereditary genetic disease in Catalonia that seriously and progressively affects the respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems of people who suffer from it. CF, which currently affects one in 6.700 babies, and is detected byscreening methods neonatal
