The pediatric surgery team at Parc Taulí has performed an abdominal laparoscopy for the first time on a 35-week premature newborn weighing only 1.900kg.

The newborn was being monitored by the professionals at Parc Taulí because the Prenatal Diagnostic Unit had detected intestinal atresia during a check-up. This congenital malformation causes an intestinal occlusion that prevents the baby from being able to feed at birth. That is why it is very important to diagnose the malformation, monitor the pregnancy well and operate quickly on the baby at birth.

The baby was born prematurely at 35 weeks of gestation and, right after, Dr. Clara Esteva and Dr. Paula J. Arribas performed abdominal laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgery, with 3mm material.

The baby is recovering favorably in the Neonatal ICU, without any complications, and will soon be able to go home.

The intervention could be carried out quickly thanks to the joint work of a multidisciplinary team made up of professionals from the services of pediatric surgery, pediatric anaesthesiology, nursing, newborns and prenatal diagnosis.

World Premature Day

Today, November 17, is World Prematurity Day. In 2022, 2.001 babies were born in Parc Taulí, of which 6% were premature. Of the total number of premature babies, 20% are very premature, that is to say, they were born with less than 32 weeks of gestation.

The theme of this year's world day is "Skin to skin for all babies". This is why the Neonatology Unit and the Neonatal ICU of Parc Taulí remind us of the importance of promoting the emotional bond between mothers/fathers and their babies, encouraging maximum time together. This closeness provides confidence and security to face the admission time, which can last months, and helps them establish the relationships for future parenting.

2nd edition Gymcana for the premature

This Saturday, November 18, the 2nd edition of the Premature Gym will be held at Parc del Parc Taulí from 10 a.m. to 13 p.m.

The Parc Taulí Neonatology Unit team has again organized this family activity where there will be various tests distributed throughout the park. To finish, there will be a children's performance by Jaume Barri and a chocolate bar for everyone.
