The Parc Taulí Cardiology Service has performed around 13.000 cardiac catheterizations since this procedure came into operation in 2007.
It is a test that allows you to diagnose and assess pathologies of the heart and coronary arteries. In addition, it makes it possible to carry out minimally invasive treatments, such as the implantation of coronary stents, the repair or replacement of some heart valve, the repair of congenital anomalies of the heart or biopsies, among others.
Among the various cardiovascular pathologies, Parc Taulí mainly assists patients with ischemic heart disease that occurs when an artery in the heart is blocked, heart failure and atrial fibrillation, a very common form of arrhythmia characterized by irregular of the rhythm of the heart

In recent years, professionals in the Cardiology service have seen a change in the trend in the detection of ischemic heart disease, with a higher incidence in young people, around 50 years old, when previously these pathologies arose at more advanced ages.
This fact is due to the change in people's habits, which are becoming less and less healthy. As pointed out by Dr. Josep Guindo of the Cardiology Service, "there is more and more sedentary lifestyle and balanced diets are not followed. The sum of this tendency and other bad habits increase the possibility of suffering from heart disease at a younger age".
Therefore, taking care of yourself by following a healthy lifestyle is essential to control risk factors and prevent cardiovascular disease.
The Heart Attack Code, a goal for Parc Taulí
In 2014, the application of the Heart Attack Code (IAM) was established in the Catalan area. This is a protocol that is activated when a person presents symptoms of a possible heart attack by calling 112 or a request from primary care or the hospital.
At present, Parc Taulí, despite having extensive experience in the treatment of these patients, is not yet part of the Codi Infarct network of hospitals. Patients must be referred to another centre, usually in Barcelona. This fact leads to a significant delay in the start of treatment.
However, from the Cardiology Service they hope to be able to implement this code as soon as possible to guarantee immediate attention to patients, since "when a patient has a heart attack, treating it within the first hour significantly limits heart damage and improves patients' prognosis and survival".
World Heart Day
World Heart Day is celebrated on September 29, which aims to raise awareness of different heart pathologies and, at the same time, raise awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
