During the morning, 43 people were treated by Dra. Jana Merino, director of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery service; the Dr. Joaquim Vallespín, section head of the Vascular Surgery service, and Dra. Begoña Molina, from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service. Two people have been referred to the Vascular Surgery service for a more specific check.
Stroke is one of the most common health problems for people, affecting around 13.000 people in Catalonia each year and causing different levels of disability in 45% of those affected.
There are two types of stroke: ischemic and hemorrhagic. The first occurs when a thrombus blocks an artery, preventing blood flow and oxygen from reaching the brain region that depends on that artery. The second occurs when a blood vessel breaks in the brain, causing a hemorrhage. Stroke is the leading cause of severe disability and dependency in adults and is among the three leading causes of death in Spain.
El Parc Taulí provides a comprehensive approach to stroke patients with a multidisciplinary team: from the Neurology, Neurosurgery, Emergency Services (medical and nursing); Interventional Radiology, ICU, Neurorehabilitation, stretchers and administration. And, in the case of pediatric strokes, neuropediatricians and paediatricians.
