Parc Taulí already offers its oncology patients the possibility of accessing a new technique to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy. This is possible thanks to the donation, by the Association Laia Mira La Vida és Xula, of a machine that offers the scalp cooling system.
The scalp cooling technique is the only effective treatment to help reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss. The machine has two integrated helmets, which allows two patients to be included at the same time, which are placed before, during and after the chemotherapy treatment, reducing the temperature of the scalp and keeping it between 18 and 22 degrees. In this way, vasoconstriction of the hair follicles is achieved, reducing the cellular uptake of the drug and the degree of hair loss.
This therapy can be offered to oncology patients undergoing cytostatic drug treatments, specifically Taxol* and Carbo-taxol*. The service has had this resource since April and 8 users have been able to use this resource.
Although the great benefit is to avoid alopecia in most cases, this technique also has a positive effect on the mental health of the cancer patient, improving self-esteem by seeing their image not so changed by chemotherapy and helping to the completion of the oncological procedure.
This morning, the president of L'Associació La Vida és Xula, Montse Guindo, which raises funds for research and complementary treatments for cancer patients, visited the Oncology Day Hospital to see how well the machine He was also accompanied by the director of the Medical Oncology Service, Dr. Miguel Ángel Seguí; the nursing coordinator of the Oncology Day Hospital, Javier Garcia; the nurse responsible and technicians in auxiliary nursing care and responsible for the machine, Lluïsa Horcas, Carmen Fernández and Núria González.
Life is cool
It is a community born in memory of Laia Mira, who unfortunately died of cancer. Laia's strength made her friends decide to continue with her altruistic and fighting spirit by creating the Laia Mira La Vida és Xula Association. Its main goal is to raise funds for research and complementary treatments for cancer patients.
