For two days, the city of Sabadell is hosting the 13th Congress of the Catalan-Balearic Palliative Care Society, organized by Parc Taulí. The inaugural event highlighted the congress as a space for meeting, learning and an opportunity to reflect on current and future palliative care.
The president of Parc Taulí, Dolors Costa, highlighted Parc Taulí as one of the healthcare centers that in 1990 began offering palliative care to its patients, within the Vida Program, with 4 hospitalization beds. And in 1995, a PADES team for adults and an Outpatient Comprehensive Palliative Care Evaluation Team (EAIA) were added. “The sensitivity and specialization of our professionals led to the expansion of these services. That is why in 2017 we already had the first pediatric PADES team. And now, Parc Taulí has 21 adult hospitalization beds at the Albada socio-sanitary center, 1 EAIA ambulatory comprehensive evaluation team, 1 UFISS team, 3 adult PADES teams and 2 pediatric PADES teams”, explained Dolors Costa.
The multidisciplinary palliative care team, made up of a medical team, nurses, TCAIS, social workers, psychologists and with the participation of occupational therapists and physiotherapists, cares for around 1.800 with a comprehensive plan focused on the person, controlling symptoms and guaranteeing the necessary emotional support, both for the patient and for family members and caregivers.
For her part, the coordinator of the palliative nursing team at Parc Taulí and president of the Congress, Montserrat López, thanked Sabadell for choosing it as the host city for the day because Parc Taulí is an example of the palliative care model, improving and adapting to the current reality to offer quality care.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the Director of Nursing Care of the Catalan Health System, Dr. Carme Planas; the former president of the Catalan-Balearic Palliative Care Society, Dr. Jordi Trelis; the current president, Dr. Cristina Farriols; and the mayor of the city of Sabadell, Marta Farrés.

The Congress began this morning and will continue until tomorrow, Saturday, February 22, at noon. Sabadell has taken over from Igualada to offer these biannual conferences that bring together experts in palliative care to share knowledge, experiences and the latest advances. In addition, this year there will be a caregivers' panel, with testimonies from family members who have experienced the palliative care process firsthand.
