Breast cancer is the most common type of tumor among the female population in Catalonia. More than 5.000 new cases are diagnosed each year and it is estimated that one in eight women will have it throughout their lives. In 40% of patients, treatment of the disease requires a mastectomy, a surgery that consists of partial or total removal of the breast.
This intervention has a significant physical impact, as it alters the body's appearance and can create difficulties in mobility and postural balance. Psychologically, the loss of the breast can also cause a decrease in self-esteem, loss of femininity, anxiety and depression. This emotional impact affects the quality of life of the woman who suffers it and can last a long time after treatment.
To mitigate these effects, a team of professionals and researchers from Parc Taulí and the Institute of Research and Innovation – I3PT are working on the Pit3D project, aiming to design customized external breast prostheses with 3D technology in the 3D Laboratory of Parc Taulí, according to the specific needs of each patient. These prostheses provide more advantages than conventional ones because improve symmetry, comfort, adaptability, weight and breathability for all cancer patients undergoing a mastectomy.
To make this project a reality, sports stores Wala and WorldCoo want to give their support through solidarity roundingi.
People who shop at Wala will have the opportunity to finance the project by rounding up the amount of the ticket you purchased with the remaining cents.
With external breast prostheses customized with 3D technology, the lives of breast cancer patients who have required mastectomy and who, by their own decision or due to medical circumstances, do not opt for breast reconstruction will be improved. It not only improves the recovery process, but also empowers women in very difficult times.
This new sponsorship campaign also aims to make society aware of I3PT's research and innovation projects with the aim of encouraging them to participate in helping to improve medical care.
