The Parc Taulí Ophthalmology Service team has performed 363 eye tests to perform early detection of glaucoma and help make this silent disease visible. During the tests, 25 people have been referred to the Ophthalmology Service.
The people in charge of carrying out these tests were a team made up of two ophthalmologists, Dr. Nathalie Gutiérrez and Dr. Gianluca Fatti; two optometrists, Cèlia Blanch, Gemma Pedrós; a TCAI, Ana López; an Ophthalmology resident, Marina Potau and a medical student.
Both glaucoma and ocular hypertension do not cause any visual symptoms until the disease is very advanced. Glaucoma is an irreversible optic neuropathy that can be controlled with treatment: drops, laser or surgery. But if left untreated and not detected quickly, it can cause irreversible blindness. Parc Taulí makes between 80 and 90 weekly visits to patients with glaucoma to monitor the disease.
With this initiative, the professionals at Parc Taulí wanted to make the population aware of the importance of regular ophthalmological examinations in order to be able to make an early detection and prevent the disease, since vision lost due to glaucoma cannot be recovered.
