Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed tumor in men, representing 15% of all diagnosed cases and is the third cause of cancer mortality.

The Uro-Oncology Unit at Parc Taulí diagnoses around 200 new cases of prostate cancer each year. In fact, high-grade prostate cancer is the most aggressive, with a prevalence of between 50 and 60 new cases per 100.000 inhabitants each year. This cancer is usually diagnosed in men between 50 and 70 years old, but it can also appear at younger ages.

The diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of prostate cancer are addressed through the coordination of a multidisciplinary team formed by professionals from the services of urology, oncology, imaging diagnostics, pathological anatomy, pharmacy and clinical trials, among others. In this way, personalized treatment can be offered to each patient.

In addition, early detection of this type of cancer is increasingly being done, given that hereditary prostate cancer tends to be detected more often. "The number of patients who have a genetic mutation and who arrive at the hospital for an early diagnosis has increased. This is possible because diagnosis has been improved, not only clinically, but also molecularly", says Dr. Enrique Gallardo of the Medical Oncology Service.

Likewise, the oncologist points out that "In the care of oncological patients, treatment has also been improved, with the incorporation of new techniques and surgical instrumentation, such as Da Vinci systems, and drugs that have shown improvement in patient survival"In fact, in the last year Parc Taulí has initiated around sixty highly complex systemic or pharmacological treatments.

The Uro-Oncology Unit offers patients the possibility of participating in clinical trials that determine the therapeutic effects of therapies and contribute to the quality of care.

World Prostate Cancer Day

World Prostate Cancer Day is celebrated every June 11. It is a day that aims to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and treatments for this disease.

This year, the Catalan League of Oncological Aid Foundation -Oncolliga- is marking the date under the motto “Break the silence”, which urges the population to think about their health and encourage urological check-ups.
