The project to completely reform the Emergency Department of the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell is beginning to become a reality. This morning the Minister of Health, Olga Pané, accompanied by the manager of the Barcelona Metropolitan North Health Region, Candela Calle, visited the spaces where the works will be carried out, which should allow better care for users and greater comfort for professionals.

The first thing that has been done is to close the porch of the Taulí building and prepare the space to convert it into the new Pediatric Emergency Department. Until now, the pediatric emergency department was in the same place as the adult emergency department. With the renovation, there will be separate access, circuit and boxes for adults and children.

“The Emergency Department is the last space that was missing to reorganize within Taulí –Minister Pané explained.  "With this action we will renovate 5.000 m2 and gain almost 1.000 for pediatric emergencies. It is a very important step for the hospital."

The tender for the comprehensive reform of the Emergency Service was published this June and the deadline for submitting offers ends in July. “If all goes well, we will be in a position to start work in 2026", Pané assured. The project will be carried out in phases and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. The definition of each of the phases will depend on the final winner. The overall cost of the reform is 14 million euros.

To combine the works with the provision of the service and ensure minimal healthcare impact, an external module of 500 m2 will be built. In this module, triage and assistance for less complex emergencies will be carried out. In this way, an “empty” space will be left in the Emergency Service that can be used as needed at any time. The module will be removed when the works are finished.

The objective of the Emergency Department reform is not to increase the number of patients treated but to improve the conditions and care circuits."This project improves patient comfort and the possibility of incorporating technologies into the Emergency Department. This is the most important thing and is what we are looking for. Precisely what we are doing now is working with primary care and home care so that there is not so much need to come to the Emergency Department," the minister said. Parc Taulí Hospital treats 157 thousand patients annually in the Emergency Department, with an average of 400 patients per day.

The comprehensive reform project of the Emergency Department of the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell comes after two relevant actions were carried out in 2024 that have helped to provide better care to users. In May 2024, a Short Stay Emergency Unit was launched, a device with 20 rooms (10 doubles and 10 singles) that serves as a transitional space for patients with a maximum stay of 72 hours. In March 2024, an observation room with 16 boxes also came into operation, in a quiet and comfortable environment of around 200 m2.

The Emergency Department works are part of an ambitious hospital transformation project that began in 2022 with the inauguration of the Ripoll Building and has added actions such as the new endoscopy room; the new pediatric outpatient consultations in the Santa Fe building, the expansion and reform of the Intensive Care Unit, the new surgical block (with 8 high-complexity operating rooms) and the Major Outpatient Surgery operating room. Minister Pané visited these spaces today and met with the center's management. "We were able to learn about all the hospital's new projects and how they are being implemented."

Before visiting Parc Taulí Hospital, the Minister of Health visited the Mutuam La Creueta Care Center, also in Sabadell. She held a meeting with the management and took a tour of the intermediate care floor.
