In the field of European medicine, it is common for doctors to temporarily integrate into the surgical services of other hospitals to learn new techniques that they can later implement in their centers. This experience, known as fellowship, allows medical knowledge to be available to a wide range of professionals.

Following this line, the General Surgery and Digestive System Service at Parc Taulí has recently welcomed the first fellows  -doctors who are taking this postgraduate training- with the aim of presenting them with the robotic approach to coloproctological pathologies (diseases of the colon, rectum and anus).

On the one hand, between February and June they hosted a Czech surgeon on a scholarship with a study program from the European Society of Coloproctology. On the other hand, from June to November the professionals of Parc Taulí worked hand in hand with Dr. Zoë Pironet, a surgeon from the KU Leuven hospital in Belgium, who received a study scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Health.

In both cases, the fellows They were able to develop professionally in addressing pathologies with the Da Vinci robot; a surgical assistance system that allows minimally invasive surgeries to be performed with great precision. “We accompany them throughout the learning process so that they can achieve the foundations to apply the techniques in their services”, explains Dr. Laura Mora, director of the General Surgery and Digestive System Service.

However, landing in operating rooms is always done “by the hand of a very close and attentive team”, says Dr. Pironet, who also argues that Parc Taulí "It has a long history in robotic approaches and makes it an excellent center for expanding medical knowledge."

Likewise, Dr. Anna Pallisera, head of the Colorectal Unit and tutor of Dr. Pironet, states that it has been a “an enriching experience that has allowed us to generate synergies and learn from each other.”

The General Surgery Service at Parc Taulí values the experience very positively and hopes to welcome more doctors in the future.
