The Hospital Pharmacy service at Parc Taulí, and more specifically the Outpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy (UFAPEx), has been recognized with the medium-level Hospital Pharmacy Outpatient Unit Certification (Q-PEX) by the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH), becoming the first accredited unit in the province of Barcelona and the third in Catalonia, along with the Josep Trueta University Hospital in Girona and the Joan XXII University Hospital in Tarragona.

This is a certification that endorses a model of excellence focused on patient safety and quality of care through the evaluation of 118 indicators based on planning, resource management, outpatient care itself and the research and innovation tasks that are carried out within the service. Currently, 21 pharmacy services in Spain are accredited with this standard.

The Q-PEx certification recognizes the implementation of a structured, evaluable and person-centered care model, aligned with the CMO (Capacity, Motivation and Opportunity) Pharmaceutical Care model. This approach allows patients to be stratified according to their real needs and adapt the intensity of pharmaceutical monitoring, ensuring more personalized, efficient and health outcome-oriented care.

"This accreditation demonstrates the service's dedication to ensuring that users receive quality pharmaceutical-hospital care, with a clear commitment to improving patient confidence and experience. However, the certification encourages us to continue the work we do to evolve and adapt to the relevant needs at all times.", explains Dr. Mònica Gómez-Valent, director of the Pharmacy Service.

In this way, the UFAPEx of Parc Taulí positions itself as a reference unit in Spain in pharmaceutical care for outpatients, reinforcing the center's commitment to quality, innovation and healthcare that is increasingly focused on people.

The accreditation was awarded on Thursday, March 12, at the Ripoll Building of the Parc Taulí Healthcare Corporation Consortium (CCSPT) by Mr. Jordi Nicolás Pico, vice president of the SEFH, and Mr. Ignacio Sanz, regional manager of healthcare management at AbbVie Spain. In addition, Dr. Ana Martí, director of strategy and quality at the CCSPT, Dr. Mónica Gómez-Valent, director of the Pharmacy Service, and Jorge del Estal and Javier Delgado, pharmacists responsible for the Outpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy Unit, also participated.

“QPEx is not just a certification; it is a way of understanding pharmaceutical care. It helps us put the patient at the center, streamline processes and ensure that every decision we make brings real value, both in terms of safety and in clinical experience and outcomes.”, highlights Jorge del Estal, pharmacist responsible for UFAPEx.

Likewise, Mr. Valle Iglesias, institutional relations manager of AbbVie Spain, highlighted that the union of SEFH and Parc Taulí allows them to work “to ensure excellence in patient care”. Furthermore, he added that “This recognition highlights the service's continued commitment to improving healthcare quality”.

The Pharmacy Service, a consolidated area of the hospital

The Pharmacy Service of Parc Taulí has a highly specialized multidisciplinary team that develops a healthcare, teaching and research activity oriented towards continuous improvement and excellence in patient care. In this context, the Outpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy Unit (UFAPEx) has consolidated itself as a key space in hospital pharmaceutical care, especially in patients with complex and long-term treatments.

Currently, the Outpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy treats nearly 200 patients a day, many of them with chronic pathologies and highly complex treatments. The unit has recently incorporated an automated medication dispensing system, which reinforces the safety of the process, improves traceability and allows for an improved patient experience, potentially benefiting more than 4.000 patients.

“Technology is an ally that allows us to free up time and resources so that the true differential value is pharmaceutical care. The CMO model helps us focus our efforts on patients who really need it and guarantee effective continuity of care”, concludes del Estal.
