The III Conference on Intellectual Disability, held in the Auditorium of Parc Taulí, was a success in terms of attendance and the topics discussed in the three tables.
Dr. Ramon Coronas, head of section of SEMS-DI of Vallès Occidental, welcomed the attendees. This year, the conference focused on three axes: health, innovation and care.
The first panel discussed medical comorbidities in intellectual disability. Dr. Joaquin San José, a family doctor at ABS Gràcia Merinals in Sabadell, participated and spoke about the organic pathology of intellectual disability. The director of the Pediatrics service, Dr. Raquel Corripio, focused on obesity and metabolic alterations in children and young people with intellectual disability. And, to close this first block, the director of the Neurology service, Dr. Gemma Sansa, spoke about neurological problems, such as epilepsy.
The second table discussed new strategies and innovations in intellectual disability such as: immersive therapy for anxiety and its impact on cognition, behavior and brain functionality, presented by the head and research technician of the neurodevelopmental disorders group (IDIBGI) of the Parc Hospitalari Martí i Julià de Girona, Dr. Susanna Esteba and Jennifer Cooper; sensory hydrotherapy, presented by the social integration technician and psychologist of Sant Joan de Déu, Luisaura González and Marta Cervera or alternative communication systems for people with ASD, presented by the speech therapist of Sant Joan de Déu, Paula Resina.
Finally, the focus was on supporting families and caregivers of people with functional diversity. Magda Casamitjana, coordinator of the “Quality rights” model in Mental Health at Sant Joan de Déu and Fundació Hospitalàries, was responsible for giving the talk to all those in attendance.
The head of the Adult Hospitalization and Psychiatric Emergencies Area, Dr. Isabel Parra, concluded the day.
