Parc Taulí has carried out the first pediatric organ donation in controlled asystole, a very important step that has allowed to improve the quality of life of other people and their families. Although the hospital had already participated in pediatric donations in brain death, this was the first time that this type of donation in controlled asystole has been carried out.
This gesture of great generosity has been possible thanks to the solidarity of a family who, at an extremely difficult time, decided to help other people through organ and tissue donation.
Donation in controlled asystole occurs after the withdrawal of life support measures in patients with an irreversible prognosis and once death has been confirmed, always guaranteeing respectful care and support for the family throughout the process.
For a donation of this nature to be possible, the coordination of many professionals and teams is essential. The transplant coordinator, the extraction teams and the transplant teams of the receiving hospitals participate, but in this case the involvement of professionals from the Pediatrics Service and the pediatric palliative care team, who have accompanied the family at all times, has also been especially important.
During 2025, Parc Taulí has registered 14 organ donors, thanks to whom 32 organ transplants have been carried out, as well as 62 tissue donors.
Parc Taulí is a leading center for organ and tissue donation in Catalonia. Actions like this show how donation can transform pain into hope for many people.
