Healthcare professionals who carry out management or administrative tasks for a few years and want to return to healthcare activity must present a retraining plan.
This is the case of Dr. Patricia Barrio, neurosurgeon at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), who has held the surgical subdirectorate of this center for more than two years. “I was very clear that I wanted to come to Parc Taulí because it has a very well-rated neurosurgery service.”, assures Dr. Patricia Barrio.
In this sense, he acknowledges that “I was attracted not only by the surgical side of the service; but also by the multidisciplinary organization with other specialties. I am interested in working through processes or the circuits established with patients, such as those in neurooncology, where they have an established circuit where the neurologist, oncologist and neurosurgeon visit them. The interprofessional dynamics are very interesting".
During this week, Dr. Patricia Barrio has been following neurosurgical interventions, visiting hospitalized patients, following outpatient visits or attending the service's multidisciplinary meetings.
The Neurosurgery service at Parc Taulí was consolidated as its own service in 2021. It is currently made up of six neurosurgeons, under the direction of Dr. Eva Cardona.
Dr. Patricia Barrio graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Oviedo (2008), although she had previously studied Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy. She completed her specialized training in neurosurgery at the Hospital del Lleó (2011-2016). She then completed a one-year fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Asklepios Kinderkilnik of Sankt Augustin in Bonn (Germany). In 2017 she joined the Neurosurgery service at HUCA, where at the end of 2023 she was appointed Deputy Surgical Director. Now, she is returning to the Neurosurgery service.
