Pediatric plastic surgery is a surgical area dedicated to treating facial malformations in children, to avoid future sequelae that condition the child's quality of life.
It is a very specific surgical specialty, which few hospitals have. With the incorporation of Dr. Mireia Riba to the Pediatric Surgery service, together with Dr. Begonya Sánchez and Dr. Mireia Gaspar, Parc Taulí is positioned as one of the few healthcare centers that has a complete service, with three healthcare professionals to address the entire spectrum of pediatric plastic surgery, such as cleft lip and palate and burns, auricular pathology (of soft parts) and vascular malformations.
By the director of the Pediatric Surgery service, Dr. Bernardo Núñez, “The incorporation of Dr. Riba brings us, on the one hand, clinical experience and the ability to respond to complex cases. And, on the other, a specialized vision in pediatric reconstructive pathologies such as cleft lip and palate or burn treatments.".
"It is a challenge to be the first pediatric plastic surgeon at Parc Taulí. But my desire is to grow this specialty in collaboration with other services such as Maxillofacial surgery. Children with facial malformations, for example cleft lip and palate, need a multidisciplinary team, surgery is not the end. The intervention of a speech therapist, dentist, otolaryngologist is also very important. Comprehensive treatment is very important for their treatment and recovery”, explains Dr. Mireia Riba.
Dr. Mireia Riba Martínez graduated in Medicine from the University of Barcelona at the Bellvitge Hospital (2005-2011) and specialized in pediatric surgery at Parc Taulí (2012-2017). She then joined the pediatric surgery team at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, where she has been a part for 9 years, specializing in pediatric plastic surgery. Her professional career will help facilitate the improvement of healthcare circuits, multidisciplinary work and the training of the team and residents. Strengthening the quality, safety and continuity of care for our pediatric patients.
