Interview with Dr. Joan Solà Aznar: Chief Medical Officer

As the singer-songwriter says "now that I'm twenty" we can look back and see the people who have passed through our unit over the years. Today we will talk, only, about the doctors who have come to do their Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Residence, about those who spent time with us on the way to achieving their dreams as Dr. Capdevila Thomas, currently at the Guttmann Institute, or Dra. Isabel Faura, head of Pades at the Mataró Hospital or Dr. Bovè or Dr. Josep Sanz López or Dr. Begoña Marín or Dr. Gemma Vidal. Others came to stay with us like Dr. Manuel Hernandez or Dr. Abel Mujal or in this case Dr. Joan Solà Aznar who arrived a few years ago to be Head of Medicine of our unit.

A great professional with extensive experience in management at our Hospital, which brought visibility and recognition to our activity in the home of patients. As President of the Catalan Balearic Society of Home Hospitalization, he gave his name and form to this professional society that currently groups the 26 HaD Units operating in Catalonia linked to large hospitals such as CAIDos de Maig and Sant Pau, Germans Tries University Hospital and Pujol, HU Bellvitge, H.Clínic, HU Arna de Vilanova, HUVall d'Hebron…

We will talk to him about the past and future of the HaD.

Joan, you have been the Head of Medicine at HaD for thirteen years, what surprised you most about this method of care?

I was mainly surprised by the high assessment that patients make of home hospitalization, which is clearly higher than what they do of conventional hospitalization.

Now, what would you highlight about this hospital admission system?

I would emphasize that it is an alternative to conventional hospitalization which, apart from its cost-efficiency, allows it to attend to all the pathologies that require hospitalization as long as the patient is stable, and allows the patient to be in his environment, more comfortable, and with less risk of complications (geriatric syndromes, nosocomial infections, etc.).

You are one of the professionals that evaluates the medical patients to be admitted to HaD. What are the most common pathologies suffered by this patient?

In terms of medical conditions are the decompensations of the prevailing medical conditions (chronic bronchitis, asthma and heart failure) and also the infections that require endovenous antibiotic. With regard to surgical pathologies, complex surgical care.

When you are offered a HaD admission, what are the most frequently asked questions patients ask?

If it is safe to go home with the medical problem they have. It is normal for the first time to have some fear.

If the patient has already been admitted to HaD, what is the most common opinion they make?

The assessment is very positive in the vast majority of cases. Almost all those who try this type of hospitalization, when they are in similar circumstances ask to be admitted to home hospitalization.

In the event that you or someone in your family had to enter HaD, would you have any doubts?

No, none I would much rather have you come into your home whenever possible.
