Endocrine Surgery - Head and Neck

The Endocrine Surgery Unit - Head and Neck is made up of surgeons Dr. Santiago Barcons Vilaplana and Dr. Xavier Guirao Garriga, together with the resident who is rotating through the Unit.

Patients with pathology that may require diagnosis and/or surgical treatment of:

  • glands endocrine of the thyroid i parathyroid.
  • Tumors of the head and neck (mainly parotid and submaxillary salivary glands, cervical cysts and other stromal tumors).
  • Lymph nodes located outside the abdominal cavity.
  • Melanoma.

The coordinator of the Unit also participates in the multidisciplinary group for the prevention of infections in relation to surgery (PREVINQ-CAT).

Targets

We highlight:

  • Achievement of care excellence by offering the best and most advanced surgical treatments, together with comprehensive care for the patient and their environment.
    In addition, it promotes teamwork with the Services:
    • Endocrinology and Nutrition, Imaging Diagnostics, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology and Laboratory/Clinical Analyzes (cervical endocrine surgery)
    • Dermatology (melanoma)
    • Hematology and Hemotherapy, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases (nodal pathology)
  • Active and dynamic participation in pre- and postgraduate training. The unit's priority is the training of UAB Medical Degree students, General Surgery and Digestive System residents and the training, as a reference unit, of those specialists interested in endocrine surgery.
  • Identification, design, development, analysis, communication and publication of the lines of research that the specialty identify relevant for the improvement of the healthcare process in general, in addition to actively participating in basic translational research.

Relationship with the Breast Pathology Unit

The Unit has a functional relationship with the Breast Pathology Unit, collaborating in:

  • The surgery
  • The distribution of surgical sessions (mainly operating theaters of the Ambulatory Surgical Centre).
  • The planning of the undergraduate teaching of the Medicine students of the Parc Taulí Teaching Unit.
  • The training of residents in the specialty of General Surgery and the Digestive System.

We highlight:

  • Study of risk factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy.
  • Usefulness of continuous intra-operative neuromonitoring in complex cervical endocrine surgery.
  • Risk factors and early detection of anaplastic thyroid cancer.
  • Thyroid cancer risk factors for Bethdesa III and IV thyroid nodules.
