What is PrEP?
La pre-exposure prophylaxis, PrEP for the acronym in English, is the daily treatment with HIV drugs that people receive seronegatives, but exposed to high risk of contracting HIV infection, in order to reduce the chance of becoming infected with it.
Who can consider taking PrEP?
PrEP can be taken by people who do not have HIV infection, but who are at high risk of getting it through sex or injecting drug use.
It is considered appropriate to prescribe it to men who have sex with men, transsexual women and women engaged in prostitution who do not use condoms and who meet any of the following criteria:
- More than 10 sexual partners a year.
- Anal sex without a condom in the last year.
- Drug use related to the maintenance of unprotected sex in the last year.
- At least one sexually transmitted infection in the last year.
- Performing post-exposure prophylaxis on several occasions in the last year.
