Introduction to hemodialysis

The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra. The kidneys are two twin organs located in the middle part of the back above the waist.

The main functions of the kidneys are:

  • Eliminate toxins from the body from the blood.
  • Regulate the amount of water and electrolytes.
  • Contribute to the control of TA.
  • Control the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, and of vitamin D.
  • They produce hormones such as erythropoietin.

When the kidneys stop working completely or partially we say that the person is in Kidney failure. If this persists over time and is not considered reversible, we are talking about Chronic Kidney Failure.

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a renal replacement therapy that aims to replace kidney function. It consists in drawing the blood from the body through a vascular access and transferring it to a dialysis or filter, through which the blood passes through one of the compartments and on the other hand the dialysis fluid, separated by a semipermeable membrane .
