A research project of Parc Taulí looking for volunteers to participate in two studies which analyze the management of emotions in people who present obesity or eating disorders. This research is led by researcher Alfredo Aguilar, Mental Health specialist at Parc Taulí.

Both studies will be carried out simultaneously and seek to understand in depth how these pathologies can affect and hinder the way in which patients regulate their emotions on a day-to-day basis, thus influencing their mental health. The selected individuals will contribute to a greater understanding of mental health by professionals, which could have a significant impact on the development of more effective intervention and treatment strategies in this area.

The participants in the studies must be people without psychopathologies and it is essential that they are not currently following up in mental health services.

The results obtained from the tests will be compared with those of a sample of patients diagnosed and treated for eating disorder or obesity at the Mental Health service and at the Bariatric Surgery service at Parc Taulí, respectively.

STUDY 1: EMOTIONAL DISREGULATION AND OBESITY. CHARACTERIZATION AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS

The aim of the first study is to investigate the difficulties in regulating emotions in users with obesity, as well as the presence of some related factors, such as specific symptoms of low mood, anxiety, alterations in eating behavior, difficulties to identify and express emotions, body awareness, intolerance of uncertainty or impulsivity. For the study to be representative, 300 participants are needed, of which 150 subjects must be from the control group.

They can participate in this study women and men aged 18 to 63, who will have to complete several questionnaires at home lasting approximately 75 minutes. As exclusion criteria, it is requested not to be following up in mental health services or present psychopathology at present, in addition to not presenting obesity criteria (Body Mass Index equal to or greater than 30).

In this second study, we want to analyze the management of emotions in patients with eating disorders (ED), and the presence of some related factors, such as, for example, symptoms typical of a low mood, anxiety, difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, among others.

For this study, 200 participants are needed, of which 100 subjects will be from the healthy control group. In this case, women aged 13 to 61 can participate, who will have to complete questionnaires at home lasting approximately two hours. Optionally, a 30-minute test (face-to-face or virtual) would also be administered to analyze intellectual capacity and the ability to detect emotions and insinuations. As exclusion criteria, it is requested not to be following up in mental health services or to present psychopathology at present.
