Lluís Blanch, former director of the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT) and director of the Parc Taulí-UAB University Institute, has been chosen corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (RAMC)The reception ceremony took place this Tuesday, May 13, in the Gimbernat Room of the RAMC, in an extraordinary session during which Blanch delivered his acceptance speech entitled “Innovation to optimize patient-ventilator synchrony in critically ill patients".

Blanch is an intensivist and a Doctor of Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where he was awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 1994. In 1988 he spent a year at the Meakins Christie laboratories at McGill University in Montreal, and in 1998 he spent a sabbatical year as a visiting researcher at the Department of Pulmonary Critical Care at the Regions Hospital of the University of Minnesota.

Blanch has been a key figure in the development and growth of I3PT, which he directed from its foundation in 2015 until 2024. Previously, he had been at the head of the Fundació Parc Taulí since 1999. Under his direction, the I3PT has achieved very relevant milestones such as recognition as a CERCA center and the HRS4R seal of excellence from the European Commission in 2021, as well as accreditation as an Institute of Health Research by the Carlos III Health Institute in 2023.

As a researcher, his interests focus on the acute respiratory failure and mechanical ventilationHe is a member of the translational research group in the critical patient of the I3PT, principal investigator of CIBERES group 33 and coordinator of the consolidated AGAUR group of translational research in physiopathology associated with critically ill patients. He has also published more than 270 items indexed to PubMed, with an H-index of 51. He is also the creator and founding member of Better Care, SLa whirlpool bath, spin off participated by Parc Taulí which has developed a with  to connect, integrate and analyze clinical patient data in real time.

Since the beginning of his career, he has been a firm advocate of incorporation of innovation in the hospital field, actively promoting the connection between care, research and innovation. This pioneering vision has accompanied him throughout his career and has consolidated him as a reference in this field throughout the State. Since 2021, he has coordinated the Platform for the Dynamization and Innovation of the Industrial Capacities of the National Health System (ITEMAS) and is a member of CORICAT, the Council for Research and Innovation of Catalonia, an advisory body to the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
