  • The UNCAN-Connect project will create a collaborative data platform to advance the diagnosis and treatment of six types of cancer

Starting point for the European project UNCAN-ConnectThe initial meeting, held in Tallinn (Estonia) on October 8 and 9, launched this five-year initiative which aims to Transform cancer research across Europe by creating a collaborative and decentralized data platformThe event brought together nearly 150 representatives from the participating institutions, as well as European Commission officials and experts in biomedical research, digital health and data governance.

Parc Taulí, through the University Hospital and the Institute of Research and Innovation, constitutes two of the 53 European institutions involved in this project, which brings together centers from 19 countries. UNCAN-Connect is funded by the program Horizon Europe Research and Innovationwith a budget of 29,9 million eurosand is part of the strategy of the European Mission on Cancer, What are you looking for improve the lives of more than three million people by 2030through research, innovation and international cooperation.

The core of the project is the platform UNCAN.eu, an open, secure and interoperable tool for sharing cancer research data in an ethical manner that respects patient privacyThis infrastructure, co-developed by the participating centers, will enable researchers, clinicians and public policy makers across Europe to access and analyze clinical and molecular information in a coordinated manner, accelerating the development of new prevention, diagnosis and treatment strategies.

In this framework, Parc Taulí participates as clinical data provider on lung cancer, one of the six types —along with pediatric, lymphoid, pancreatic, prostate and ovarian cancer— that will be addressed within the project. Specifically, the team will contribute to the execution of the case Early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer using advanced AI, radiomics and liquid biopsy techniques, which explores new artificial intelligence, radiomics and liquid biopsy techniques to improve early detection of lung cancer. This contribution will allow the data of patients treated at Parc Taulí to be contribute to the validation of digital models and tools that could have a significant impact on diagnosis and treatment personalization.

"Working together, we will achieve results that no country could achieve in isolation"

At the initial meeting, Kadi-Liis Veiman, UNCAN-Connect project leader, stressed the importance of building a strong European cancer data infrastructure that promotes open science, collaboration and enables more accurate and efficient clinical care: “Over the next five years, we will bring together the experience and knowledge of researchers, clinicians, patient representatives, IT professionals and other specialists, connecting the technical and clinical aspects of cancer data. Working together, we will achieve results that no country could achieve in isolation.".

Excellent news about an important European project! Совместные прорыву в онклогии I have a question related to practical treatment. The article mentions the use of advanced methods, including artificial intelligence and liquid biopsy to improve the early diagnosis of lung cancer. This is very promising.

I recently came across an article on the topic of choosing an oncological clinic and taking care of patients, where, in particular, a complex approach to managing symptoms and side effects was considered. In the context of supporting patients during treatment, there was mention of the importance of individual selection of symptomatic therapy, for example, to alleviate certain conditions. This made me wonder: how, as part of the UNCAN-Connect project or in the work of Parc Taulí, is it planned to integrate and standardize the best practices in palliative and supportive therapy for patients whose data are used in research? Especially when it comes to such common problems as pain or weakness, where sometimes preparations like the one described here can be used — https://interfresacontraelcancer.com/navigating-cancer-care-in-girona-an-insiders-look. Are you interested in how the patient's quality of life corresponds to research goals?

Hi Chris. Thank you very much for your comment and for sharing such an interesting reflection. Indeed, the UNCAN-Connect project represents a very important step towards creating a common European infrastructure for the secure and ethical exchange of data in oncology.

In this first phase, the main objective is to develop the platform and establish mechanisms for data interoperability and governance. In the case of Parc Taulí, we will participate as a data provider, contributing to this European network that will facilitate, in the future, more specific and collaborative research.

Over the next five years, the work will focus on ensuring the quality, security and accessibility of data. Once this foundation is consolidated, it will be possible to promote research more focused on clinical aspects, both from Parc Taulí and from other European centers participating in the initiative, with the shared goal of improving patients' quality of life.
