The oncologist at Parc Taulí Marina Sierra has participated in this year's edition of The TV3 Marathon, dedicated to cancer, with the aim of raising public awareness about the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of skin cancer, as well as debunking some of the myths most common associated with this disease.

During her intervention, the oncologist noted that excessive sun exposure and repeated sunburns are the main risk factor for the development of skin cancer. In this sense, he warned that not protecting oneself adequately from the sun —also during the winter months— is a behavior that significantly increases the risk of suffering from this disease.

The oncologist has also highlighted a worrying trend: the increase in the incidence of skin cancer in young people, a phenomenon that is being increasingly observed, as is the case with other types of cancer.

Regarding the data, he recalled that More than 10.000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Spain each year., of which nearly 1.000 end up being fatal, which highlights the importance of prevention, health education and early detection.

Finally, Marina Sierra highlighted the advances in treatments of skin cancer, such as immunotherapy, which has meant a significant change in the prognosis of these tumors in recent years.

After this interview, the program also featured the testimony of a patient of his, Josep Maria, who explained his case and warned of the danger of repeated sun exposure. Josep Maria was diagnosed with a metastatic melanoma and explained his experience after receiving several cycles of immunotherapy treatment.

The participation of professionals from Parc Taulí in initiatives such as TV3's La Marató reinforces the hospital's and I3PT's commitment to the scientific dissemination, social awareness and the cancer research.
