José Ibeas, nephrologist and researcher at the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT), has been chosen corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia (RAMC)The reception ceremony was held this Tuesday, April 21, in the Gimbernat Room of the RAMC, in an extraordinary session during which Ibeas delivered the welcoming speech entitled “The doctor facing artificial intelligence, or the responsibility to promote the progress of medicine in the age of algorithms".

Ibeas is a specialist in nephrology, trained at the University of Alicante and a doctorate in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1996). He has been associated with the Parc Taulí University Hospital for over twenty-five years, where he has established himself as a leader in chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, vascular access and interventional nephrology. In this area, he has launched and coordinated the Vascular Access Program of the center, recognized as a reference healthcare, teaching and research model.

Since the beginning of his career, Ibeas has been a firm advocate of incorporation of innovation and research in the healthcare fieldAt I3PT he leads the research group in Clinical, interventional and computational nephrology (CICN) and has promoted a mixed research unit with the engineering and advanced computing group of the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems of the UABThis interdisciplinary collaboration has resulted in competitive projects, scientific publications, doctoral theses and tangible knowledge transfer initiatives such as a patent in interventional anatomical simulation and the co-founding of the spin off Anais Medical, dedicated to the development of simulation models for training in invasive medical procedures.

His career also stands out for a notable teaching and scientific activity, reflected in more than 500 communications and presentations at national and international conferences, as well as in publications, doctoral thesis supervision and various academic and professional recognitions. A journey that demonstrates a constant desire to generate knowledge, share it and apply it to clinical practice.

In recent years, his work has focused significantly on the field of artificial intelligence applied to healthHe has directed the Program for the Promotion and Development of Artificial Intelligence in the Catalan Health System, is director of the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council of the Department of Health, co-directs the Master in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Health of Parc Taulí and the UAB, and is the promoter of the Taulí Health Artificial Intelligence Symposium — THAIS conference.
