The 14th edition of the charity race I Run Against Cancer, organized by the WeRun sports club, was held this Sunday with a record participation of more than 2.400 people, who have completed the five kilometers of the race with the start and finish at the amphitheater of the Parc Catalunya in Sabadell.
This year, all the money raised will go towards funding a research project at the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT) focused onstudy of the genetics of uterine cancers to improve treatment and prognosis.

The project, entitled “Study through next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the mutational profile of endometrial carcinoma”, is led by professionals from Parc Taulí and aims to expand the study of molecular alterations in endometrial tumors to advance towards a more personalized, effective and better tolerated precision oncology.
As he explains Paul Andrew, researcher and oncologist at the Parc Taulí University Hospital, "the idea of this project was born with the desire that patients with endometrial cancer could obtain a much more accurate diagnosis and, therefore, a more personalized and targeted treatment."
The study allows identify genetic alterations in tumors that can provide relevant prognostic information and help decide which treatment is most appropriate for each patient after surgery. Among other benefits, Cobo adds, “this can allow aggressive treatments to be avoided in patients with a good prognosis or facilitate access to new targeted treatments and clinical trials in those cases with a worse expected outcome.”
The initiative starts from the Taulí Scholarship received by Ruben Carrera, molecular biologist from the Molecular Pathology Service of Parc Taulí, to design an exclusive genetic study panel for endometrial cancer using massive sequencing techniques (NGS).
“Currently, this classification should be done at the molecular level and, although we routinely use alternative techniques, the most optimal is to use these massive sequencing techniques,” explains Rubén Carrera. The new panel also incorporates emerging genes and biomarkers that may play an important role in the future management of this pathology.
The project has already begun to be applied to the first patients, but one of the main challenges is the cost of the reagents necessary to carry out these molecular studies. In this sense, the Funds raised through the race will allow all patients who need to undergo surgery at Parc Taulí for endometrial cancer to benefit from this technology, and will contribute to giving continuity to a line of research with high clinical potential, as Andreu explains.
I run against cancer has consolidated itself, once again, as a leading solidarity and sports initiative in Sabadell uniting citizenship, health and research with a common goal, in the words of its organizers: to make the disease visible, talk about it without taboos and obtain more financial resources for the fight against cancer.
