  • Doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Barcelona, ​​he has more than 25 years of experience in biomedical research, translational innovation, strategic clinical research and management of scientific infrastructures in Catalonia and internationally.  

The Taulí of Trustees of the Parc Taulí Research and Innovation Institute (I3PT)-CERCA appointed Dr. Xavier Cañas new scientific director of the institutionCañas will assume the position from July 1, 2026. 

Bachelor's degree in Biology by the University of Barcelona (UB), is doctor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the same university and also has a master's degree in Xenobiotic Evaluation (UB-UAB-UPC-UV), a master's degree in Science and Welfare of Laboratory Animals from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and a master's degree in Senior Management of Healthcare Entities from IESE.

"Assuming the scientific direction of the I3PT is an exciting challenge and a great responsibility. The Institute has enormous scientific, healthcare and human potential, and we will work to continue strengthening translational and clinical research, enhance collaboration between hospital and research, and increase the impact and national and international positioning of the I3PT," explained the new director.

With a track record of more than 25 years in the field of biomedical research and innovation, Xavier Cañas has spent much of his career in leading institutions in the Catalan health and research system. For the last nine years he has been Director of Commercial and Contracted Clinical Research at the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), where he has led the transformation of its clinical research management model. 

At this stage, it has driven the growth of activity in clinical trials, as well as the development of new decentralized and patient-centered clinical research models the patientHe has also led European strategic projects and digital transformation initiatives linked to clinical trial management. 

Previously, he held various positions of responsibility at the Barcelona Science Park and at VHIR itself, linked to the management of scientific platforms and infrastructuresresearch, strategic planning and management of scientific teams and resources. 

Throughout his career he has participated in numerous national and international competitive projects, and has contributed to the development of networks and infrastructures clinical research at a national and European level. 

With this appointment, the I3PT reinforces its commitment to consolidating its scientific and strategic positioning nationally and internationally; enhance the translational and clinical research; strengthen participation in European projects and networks, and continue to advance in the knowledge transfer and innovation aimed at improving people's health. 

At the same time, his extensive experience in scientific direction and management of infrastructures and research projects will contribute to strengthening theorganizational structure of the Institute, in a strategic stage of growth, consolidation and projection of the I3PT as a center of excellence.
