Open Science

Open Science is a set of principles and practices that promotes the transparency, collaboration and accessibility to scientific results in all phases of research for reuse, redistribution and reproduction. Its aim is that anyone, whether or not a researcher, can access scientific research as a whole, not only the publications, but also the methods, data, instruments or software used.

Currently, Horizon Europe, the European Union's main funding program for research and innovation 2021-2027, integrates open science as a key strategy to ensure that publicly funded research is more accessible, collaborative and useful for the scientific community and for society, thus improving the impact, relevance and quality of research and innovation in Europe.

Top benefits

  • Greater transparency and reproducibility of results, key to being able to validate scientific discoveries and advances.
  • Open access to scientific information without financial barriers, facilitating access and use of complete data sets, which can accelerate research.
  • Encouraging collaboration, by sharing data and results openly, enabling scientific advances to be made more quickly and efficiently, as well as between scientific disciplines, allowing more integrated and multidisciplinary approaches.
  • Greater social and educational impact, enriching science education at all levels and helping decision-makers make more informed decisions based on scientific evidence.
Promoting ethical practices, ensuring that data and results are shared fairly and openly.
  • Economic return by avoiding duplication of effort and enabling more efficient use of resources after sharing data and results.

Strategies and Policies

The I3PT has one Open Science Institutional Policy which responds to the institution's commitment to favor, encourage and promote free and unrestricted access to knowledge. All the elements of this commitment are based on the mandate of Horizon Europe and Law 14/2011, of June 1, on Science, Technology and Innovation, respectively, policies that include the obligation to deposit in open research results financed with public funds and subsequently published.

Research Portal of Catalonia
From 2023, the I3PT shows publicly and in open access the results of its research through the Catalonia Research Portal (PRC). This portal also shows the research results of the main universities and research centers in Catalonia, giving visibility to the potential of the Catalan research system, strengthening the processes of unified management of research data and increasing access and visibility of the work of the research staff.
