El Program for early detection of colon and rectal cancer of the Department of Health has been active in Vallès Occidental since October 2015. In this region, the Program is coordinated by the Technical Cancer Screening Office of Parc Taulí and has three Screening Units: the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa , the Terrassa Mutual Hospital and the Sabadell Park Taulí Hospital.
The main goal of this program is to prevent and detect colon and rectal (large bowel) cancer as early as possible, so that there is a greater chance of cure.
The program is directed to women and men between 50 and 69 years old and consists of performing a very simple test i free which is collected at the pharmacy and made at home.
Colon and rectal cancer is the most common cancer in both men and women in Catalonia, with around 6.000 new cases each year, and is the second leading cause of cancer death.
Early detection of colon and rectal cancer has been shown to reduce mortality from this cancer.
