Making environments healthier could prevent almost a quarter of the global burden of disease and mortality. Clean air and a stable climate are prerequisites for good health, as are adequate water, sanitation and hygiene; the safe use of chemicals; protection from radiation; healthy and safe workplaces; sound agricultural practices; healthy cities and built environments, and the preservation of nature.
The most common consequences of these poor environmental conditions are non-communicable diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases and cancer, followed closely by trauma, respiratory infections and strokes.
