Parc Taulí joins the celebration of World Sepsis Day 150 150 Parc Taulí current affairs

September 13 is World Sepsis Day. During this day, thousands of institutions, scientific societies, hospitals and patient associations around the world will hold scientific and social events to promote the fight against this disease.

Parc Taulí joins this celebration by disseminating the campaign and publicizing the studies and collaboration of its professionals in this field.

Severe sepsis - a widespread infection of the patient - is one of the most common diseases and one of the leading causes of death among hospitalized patients. The most severe form of sepsis is septic shock, which causes a sustained decrease in blood pressure that prevents the proper supply of oxygen to the tissues. It may seem like an insignificant process compared to other life-threatening processes such as myocardial infarction or stroke, but at the moment it causes more deaths in Catalonia than these two pathologies combined.

Currently, sepsis is the leading cause of hospital mortality in Catalonia.

According to an epidemiological analysis of the situation of sepsis in Catalonia during the period 2008-2012, based on the review of 4.7000.000 hospital discharges, the incidence of severe sepsis in Catalan hospitals is 181 cases / 100.000 inhabitants and year, the which means about 17.000 episodes a year (ischemic heart disease accounts for about 11.000 admissions and stroke 8.000 per year).

The lethality of the process was 20%, an absolutely frightening figure. Currently, sepsis is the leading cause of hospital mortality in Catalonia.

Critically Ill Area of Sabadell Hospital: a leading center in research on sepsis

The Critically Ill Area of Sabadell Hospital is a leading center in research on sepsis and is part of the 'Sepsis Alliance', a global alliance that works to improve the treatment of critically ill patients with sepsis. He is also actively involved in the campaign 'The sepsis week', of international impact.

On the other hand, the director of the Critically Ill Area, Dr. Antoni Artigas, and the doctor of the Emergency Service, Dra. Berta Cistero, are members of the advisory committee of the Department of Health of the Generalitat who are working for the implementation of the sepsis code and the care management plan for these patients.

The results of the global campaign to improve the survival of patients suffering from severe sepsis will soon be published simultaneously in two highly prestigious international journals, with the active participation of Dr. Artigas. This study analyzes data for 7,5 years, of more than 15.000 patients, and shows that compliance with international recommendations for sepsis is accompanied by a decrease in mortality and hospital stay.

Parc Taulí has also worked together with the Department of Health on an epidemiological study for the last 10 years in Catalonia with a progressive improvement in the survival of patients with severe sepsis.

The study Edusepsis allowed to reduce hospital mortality from sepsis by 10%

In 2008, within the framework of the International Campaign Surviving Sepsis and with the support of the Spanish Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Critical Care and Coronary Units, the Critically Ill Area coordinated the study. Edusepsis, which reduced hospital mortality of patients affected by severe sepsis by 10% in hospitals throughout Spain, as well as improving their quality of care. The improvements provided by this study, which was published in the prestigious American journal JAMA, mean the salvation of 500 lives a year in our country.

Edusepsis it was implemented in many hospitals as an educational program aimed at disseminating the therapeutic guidelines for sepsis and improving all therapeutic aspects related to the disease. We are currently working on the second phase of the study, 'ABISS Edusepsis', which evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of a multiple intervention aimed at improving the early administration of antibiotics in severe sepsis.
