The Parc Taulí Breast Cancer Early Detection Program has evaluated the results of the last 10 years, between 2005 and 2015. The Program is aimed at the population of the Vallès Occidental Est, with a target population of about 45.000 women, d 'between 50 and 69 years of age resident in the municipalities of the area of influence of the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí.
The Parc Taulí Cancer Screening Technical Office coordinates the population program for early detection of breast cancer, promoted by the Department of Health. In addition, he has led and / or participated in several researches on breast cancer screening in our context.
Among the most significant data, the high participation rate of women stands out, with one 80%, above the Catalan average, which is about 70%. Between 2005 and 2015, more than 1.000 neoplasms were detected, and of these, 70% are invasive cancers detected at an early stage. A very significant fact is that about 90% of women diagnosed early benefit from conservative surgery.
Breast cancer is the most common in women, and its incidence or likelihood of onset increases with age. Since most known risk factors are closely related to hormonal issues and / or others that are difficult to modify through primary prevention actions, early detection of cancer (also called screening or secondary prevention), for now, is the most effective strategy for the fight against this disease.
The Screening Program is aimed at women between the ages of 50 and 69 who reside in our area of reference, who do not have a personal history of breast cancer or hereditary cancer. Digital mammography is offered every two years. After mammography, if deemed necessary, other complementary tests are performed on a scheduled basis. In the event that a neoplasm, or other at-risk injury is not diagnosed, biennial follow-up is offered within the program until age 69. In addition to the Technical Screening Office, the program includes radiologists, radiology technicians, nurses and pathologists from Parc Taulí, as well as all the professionals from the Multidisciplinary Unit of Breast Pathology at Parc Taulí and Primary Care. of the area.
Mammography (digital) is the quintessential breast cancer screening test, with considerable sensitivity. Population screening for breast cancer has helped reduce mortality from this disease in the population. Other effects need to be considered, such as false positives or false negatives (since the screening process does not have 100% sensitivity and specificity)
