What is sleep medicine? What are sleep disorders, and how do they affect our health and our lives? How do they affect adults, young people and children? How are they diagnosed and treated? These are some of the questions that Dr. Ma José Masdeu, during the fifth 'Cafè Científic, Sabadell 2016', which will take place next Tuesday, June 14, at 19 pm, in the Bar of the Unió Excursionista de Sabadell (UES), in a relaxed atmosphere and conversation with attendees that characterizes these encounters.

Dra. Masdeu, pulmonologist and expert in Sleep Medicine, is the head of the Sleep Unit of the Parc Taulí Health Corporation, accredited by the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery as a multidisciplinary unit of high complexity, with the category of Slow.

Sleep disorders are becoming more prevalent in modern societies, and not only do they affect adults, but more and more children and young people are suffering from them. Chronic sleep deprivation (sleeping less than 7 hours a day), which affects 25% of the general population, is closely related to an increased risk of diabetes, obesity and early mortality. Secondly, specific sleep disorders, such as apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) or restless legs, can have important consequences on people's lives and health, leading to even death if not treated properly.

The problem is beginning to be a major source of concern also in children and young people, especially aggravated by the use of electronic devices that alter the normal sleep cycle.

The Sleep Unit of Parc Taulí, where 1.600 sleep studies are carried out annually, has expert professionals and the most advanced technological equipment for the study of all types of sleep disorders. 60% of the studies are done at home, which allows to optimize the resources of the Unit and reach a wider range of population.

Dra. Masdeu will answer any questions you may have about this matter.
